šŸ“ļø Position Summary

The Registered Nurse Supervisor (RNS) provides leadership, coordination, and supervision of nursing and health services for youth in Short-Term Residential Therapeutic Programs (STRTP) and Crisis Stabilization Units (CSU).

Under the direction of the Director of Nursing, the RNS ensures high-quality, trauma-informed healthcare delivery that supports youth well-being and safety in compliance with all Title 22, Community Care Licensing (CCL), and Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) regulations.

This role combines supervisory oversight and administrative responsibility with limited direct clinical engagement, emphasizing the coordination of nursing staff, quality assurance, and integrated care within a multidisciplinary team environment. 

 

šŸ”Key Responsibilities -  

Supervisory and Administrative Duties (Primary – 70–80%)

Leadership & Staff Oversight

  • Supervise assigned Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs), and other health staff providing services to youth within the STRTP and CSU programs.
  • Coordinate staff schedules, ensure adequate coverage, and manage shift assignments to meet youth medical and behavioral care needs.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide coaching, and ensure ongoing professional competency among nursing staff.
  • Support the recruitment, onboarding, and orientation of new nursing personnel in collaboration with the Director of Nursing.
  • Serve as the on-site nursing lead when the Director of Nursing is off-site or unavailable.

Clinical Operations & Quality Management

  • Monitor and evaluate nursing documentation, medication administration, and compliance with agency and licensing standards.
  • Implement and uphold policies and procedures for medication storage, infection control, and health services.
  • Conduct audits of medication and treatment records to ensure accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance.
  • Participate in clinical risk management and safety reviews; identify trends and implement corrective actions as directed by the DON.
  • Ensure accurate communication between nursing, clinical, and program teams to maintain integrated care.

Training and Development

  • Provide training and mentorship to nursing staff on trauma-informed and culturally responsive care, medication management, and emergency procedures.
  • Lead or participate in new staff health trainings, including Medication Administration, Pro-ACT health protocols, and health documentation standards.
  • Assist the DON in maintaining current nursing competencies, certifications, and continuing education records.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration

  • Serve as a liaison between nursing, clinical, and program staff to ensure alignment of treatment goals and youth health needs.
  • Coordinate with physicians, psychiatrists, and external healthcare providers regarding medical treatment and follow-up care.
  • Participate in treatment planning meetings and contribute to health-related assessments and recommendations.

 

  1. Direct Care and Clinical Support Duties (Secondary – 20–30%)

Clinical Care & Assessment

  • Conduct and review nursing assessments for youth during intake, treatment, and discharge processes.
  • Provide direct care, including medication administration, wound care, and emergency response when necessary.
  • Monitor and document physical and mental health status of youth and report significant changes to the Director of Nursing and medical providers.
  • Support youth health education on medication adherence, hygiene, nutrition, and preventive wellness.
  • Serve as clinical backup during staffing shortages, emergencies, or when specialized nursing intervention is required.

Crisis Response

  • Participate in crisis intervention and stabilization efforts, ensuring health and safety during behavioral or medical incidents.
  • Provide leadership in medical triage, first aid, and coordination with emergency medical services when needed.

 

āœ… Qualifications

Required:

  • Current and valid California Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Minimum three (3) years of nursing experience, with at least one (1) year in a supervisory or charge nurse capacity.
  • Experience in adolescent behavioral health, residential treatment, or acute psychiatric
  • Working knowledge of Title 22, CCL, and DHCS
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Onsite attendance is required to meet client/patient need.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or related healthcare field.
  • Experience in STRTP, CSU, or community mental health programs.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish or other language relevant to population served).

 

Physical Skills and Abilities

  1. Stand, walk, sit, and use hands to reach, handle and maneuver objects and equipment.
  2. Lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds and walk up to a mile at a time.
  3. May be required to place youth in physical holds utilizing Safety-Care training protocols during crisis intervention situations to prevent youth from harming themselves or others.

 

Communication:

  1. Communicates clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with coworkers, supervisors, and youth.
  2. Must be able to comprehend, follow, and clearly convey instructions to others.
  3. Must be computer proficient and be able to work on a computer on daily basis.
